Our sympathy to the family of Raymond ”Tip” Kamm of Augusta who passed away on May 2nd. Tip was a 1949 graduate of Plymouth High School. His sister Evelyn Kamm lived in Plymouth.
Margaret Phillips, sister of Glenadene Webster, also passed away this week. Keep both these families in your thoughts and prayers.
If there is a good thing about our stay at home order, it is that it gives some of us more time at home and the ability to lead a slower life. Last Sunday, I had a nice visit with Ila Steiner Robb who was married to my brother. Though she did not stay at home, we were able to visit in my gazebo and to keep the proper social distance. Was nice to visit with her.
If you follow my posts, you know that stray kitties tug at my heart. I have two kitty garden sheds in my back yard. The Royal Family lives in one in the warmer months and my three newer adopted kitties are put in at night for safety in the other. Each night, a new stray comes and sits in the doorway and looks longingly into the kitty home. Feeling sorry for him, I got an old chicken coop and cleaned it out and put in fresh bedding and placed it just outside the door where he often sits. I also put out a food dish for him. Though I can’t get near him as yet, he comes each day to eat and still look longingly into the shed. It would be really great if people would take responsibility for their pets and spay them so that there would not be all the uncared for animals. I am especially saddened to see severe cases of ear mites in the stray kitties in Plymouth. Ear mites left untreated are fatal.
Tuesday I ventured to Macomb to buy groceries as I had not been out for two weeks. Went to Aldi’s and Walmart to get groceries and kitty food. Both stores had gate keepers at their entrances. All customers in both stores had on face masks. I do notice that not all people understand that the mask should cover their nose as well as their mouth. A big thank you to both these stores for trying to protect their employees and their customers.
Met two customers on my sidewalk at the antique store on Thursday and sold a history of Macomb and two Camp Ellis books. If you need something from the antique store, just give me a call and I will be happy to meet you there. Rod Cookson had purchased a rare Lincoln creamer earlier in the year and had it repaired by Creative Clay, a company which a lot of us use to repair stoneware. He was so pleased with the work that he stopped by to show me the creamer today. They do a great job.
Tom Ohnemus is making progress on installing the solar panels. He worked several evenings this week and the frame which holds the panels seems to be mostly in place. Concrete will poured early in the week unless the predicted rain prevents that. Harold like to supervise the job and climbed into the work truck to check things out one evening. Was afraid that he might have stayed in the truck and gone home with Tom but he eventually showed up about 10:30 pm and asked to be put away for the night and be fed!
Today was Mother’s Day. I hope all you mother’s had a good day despite everything. Noted on face book that many families were together in spirit and with Zoom rather than face to face contact. I note that there are often several cars parked in a drive ways here in Plymouth. Not sure that is wise but understand that people like to be with others. It is really difficult to know if there is a right answer to slow the spread of the virus.
I had a long term guest for seven weeks. I think she arrived the day the lock down started and she left on Friday. She was a student and worked in a lab on a hog farm. With many of her classes cancelled, she was not sure when she could finish her schooling. I wish her all the best.
What with staying home all the time, we need to cook. I think we all may come out of this a bit more fluffy! Anyway, I am trying recipes. Have made this before and liked it so will share with you. This is simple, healthy and tasty. Can’t beat that! It is like black bean soup with a cornbread top.
Brown a pound of ground turkey with a large chopped onion. Add two cans of black beans, a jar of medium salsa, a Tablespoon of minced garlic and two teaspoons of cumin. Mix well and place in a 9 by 13 baking dish. Mix one cup cornbread mix, one egg, one cup milk and a bit of sugar and stir. Pour this on top of the bean mixture. Bake for 20 minutes at 350 or until the cornbread is done. This is a bit spicy which is supposed to be good for you. Turkey is lean, salsa has a lot of tomatoes and peppers and beans have fiber. Hope you enjoy this dish!
